Starting Therapy
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
You do not need to be in crisis for therapy to help. Many people reach out when they feel overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, stuck in patterns they cannot seem to change, disconnected from themselves, or simply aware that something does not feel right anymore.
Therapy can help with anxiety, burnout, relationship stress, grief, trauma, ADHD overwhelm, emotional regulation, self esteem, life transitions, and many other challenges. It can also simply provide a space to slow down, process emotions, and feel supported
Do I need therapy even if I’m functioning?
You do not need to be falling apart for therapy to be helpful. Many people who seek counselling are still working, parenting, maintaining relationships, and managing day to day responsibilities while quietly struggling underneath the surface.
Therapy can help people better understand themselves, process stress and emotions, improve relationships, develop healthier coping patterns, and feel more grounded and supported before things reach a crisis point.
What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t help?
Many people come to therapy after having previous experiences that did not feel helpful, connected, or like the right fit. This can make it harder to trust the process or feel hopeful about trying again.
Therapy is not one size fits all. Different therapists have different personalities, approaches, communication styles, and areas of focus. Sometimes finding the right therapeutic relationship can make a significant difference in how supported and understood someone feels.
At Reclaim & Rise Counselling, we take care in matching clients with therapists based on their goals, preferences, concerns, and the type of support they are looking for.
What happens during the first therapy session?
The first session is usually focused on getting to know you and understanding what has been bringing you in. Your therapist may ask questions about your current challenges, personal history, relationships, stressors, goals, and what you are hoping to get out of therapy.
You do not need to prepare anything perfectly or know exactly what to say. The first session is simply a starting point.
The first session is also an opportunity to get a sense of whether the therapist feels like the right fit for you.
What if I do not know what to talk about?
This is incredibly common. Many people come into therapy feeling unsure how to explain what they are experiencing. You do not need to have the “right words” before starting.
Part of therapy is helping you make sense of thoughts, emotions, patterns, and experiences that may feel confusing, heavy, or difficult to articulate. You are not expected to have everything figured out before reaching out.
How long does therapy take?
Therapy looks different for everyone. Some people attend counselling for a few months around a specific challenge, while others benefit from longer term support and deeper personal work.
The pace of therapy depends on your goals, the concerns you are navigating, and the type of support that feels most helpful for you. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you throughout the process rather than pushing a one size fits all approach.
What if I feel nervous about starting therapy?
Feeling nervous before starting therapy is extremely normal, especially if this is your first experience with counselling or if you have had difficult experiences opening up in the past.
Many clients worry about being judged, not knowing what to say, crying during sessions, or whether therapy will actually help. A good therapist understands this and works to create a space where you can move at your own pace.
You do not need to share everything immediately for therapy to begin helping.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Therapy is confidential, which means what you share in sessions is kept private in accordance with professional and legal standards.
There are some important limits to confidentiality involving safety concerns, risk of harm, or situations required by law, which your therapist will review with you as part of the informed consent process in your first session.
Many people feel nervous opening up at first, and creating a safe, respectful, and non judgmental space is an important part of therapy.
Insurance, Fees & Coverage
Is therapy covered by insurance or benefits in Ontario?
Many extended health benefit plans cover counselling services provided by a Registered Social Worker (RSW) or Registered Psychotherapist (RP).
Coverage varies depending on your specific plan, so we recommend checking directly with your insurance provider to confirm details about reimbursement, coverage amounts, and whether pre approval is required.
Most of our clinicians are Registered Social Workers (MSW, RSW), which are commonly covered under extended health benefits plans in Ontario.
Is therapy covered by OHIP?
Private counselling services are generally not covered by OHIP. However, many people use extended health benefits through work, school, or family plans to help offset the cost of therapy.
Is therapy tax deductible in Canada?
In many cases, counselling services provided by Registered Social Workers or qualifying mental health professionals may be eligible as medical expenses for income tax purposes in Canada.
We recommend speaking with an accountant or tax professional for guidance specific to your situation.
Do you offer sliding scale or lower cost counselling?
We understand that affordability can sometimes be a barrier to accessing support. When available, Reclaim & Rise Counselling offers reduced fee options through our Rise Above Barriers Program.
Availability may vary depending on clinician capacity and current openings.
Online Therapy Across Ontario
Many people wonder whether online therapy can feel as effective or personal as meeting in person. Research consistently shows that online therapy can be highly effective for many mental health concerns, including anxiety, stress, burnout, trauma, depression, ADHD, and relationship challenges.
Many clients also find virtual counselling more accessible, flexible, and comfortable than attending therapy in person.
At Reclaim & Rise Counselling, we offer secure online therapy sessions across Ontario.
Do you only work with clients in Stratford?
No. While we offer in person counselling in Stratford, we also provide virtual therapy across Ontario.
Many of our therapists work with clients throughout Ontario using secure online video sessions. We also regularly support clients from surrounding communities including St. Marys, Tavistock, New Hamburg, Mitchell, London, Kitchener Waterloo, and other nearby areas.
What are online therapy sessions like?
Online counselling sessions are similar to in person therapy, just through secure video. You can attend sessions from home, your office, or another private space where you feel comfortable speaking openly.
Many clients are surprised by how connected and personal virtual therapy can still feel.
How do I know if online therapy is right for me?
Online therapy can be a good fit for many people, especially those with busy schedules, limited local options, childcare responsibilities, transportation barriers, health concerns, or a preference for attending therapy from the comfort of home.
Many clients are surprised by how personal, connected, and effective virtual counselling can still feel. Some people even find it easier to open up when they are in a familiar environment.
Couples, Family & Relationship Counselling
Can couples therapy help if we keep having the same fights?
Many couples reach out because they feel stuck in painful cycles of conflict, disconnection, defensiveness, resentment, or communication breakdowns.
Couples counselling can help partners better understand emotional patterns, improve communication, rebuild trust, and strengthen connection.
At Reclaim & Rise Counselling, some of our therapists use approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT-C) and the Gottman Method for couples counselling. These approaches can help couples better understand emotional needs, reduce reactive conflict patterns, improve communication, and rebuild emotional safety within the relationship.
What if my partner is unsure about therapy?
This is very common. One partner often feels ready for counselling before the other does.
Sometimes starting with a conversation about wanting support for the relationship, rather than focusing on blame, can help therapy feel less intimidating. Even when one partner feels hesitant initially, many couples find therapy becomes more comfortable once sessions begin.
Do you work with children, teens, and families?
Yes. Several of our therapists work with children, teens, parents, and families navigating emotional, behavioural, school, relationship, and mental health challenges.
We offer support for anxiety, ADHD, emotional regulation, family conflict, parenting stress, grief, self esteem, school related stress, and major life transitions. Therapy with children and teens may involve helping them better understand emotions, develop coping skills, improve communication, build confidence, and feel more supported both at home and at school.
When children or teens are struggling, the entire family is often impacted. Because children are deeply connected to the relationships and environments around them, part of the therapy process may also involve supporting parents with communication, emotional regulation, boundaries, and ways to better support their child outside of sessions. Our goal is to help the family as a whole feel more connected, supported, and understood.
Finding the Right Therapist
How do I choose the right therapist?
Finding the right therapist is important. Different therapists bring different personalities, approaches, specialties, and styles into the therapy process.
At Reclaim & Rise Counselling, we help guide clients through the matching process based on concerns, goals, preferences, and comfort level so you do not have to figure it all out alone.
What if I start with a therapist and it does not feel like the right fit?
Therapeutic fit matters, and it is completely normal for it to take time to find the right connection. Research consistently shows that the relationship between a client and therapist is one of the biggest factors in how helpful therapy feels and how much progress someone is able to make.
If something does not feel like the right fit, that is okay. Our goal is not simply to book sessions, but to help you find support that genuinely feels safe, comfortable, and helpful for you.
If you do not feel comfortable bringing this up directly with your therapist, you are always welcome to reach out to our admin team. We can help explore other options within the practice and arrange another free consultation with a different therapist who may feel like a better fit for your needs, personality, or goals.
Mental Health Diagnoses & Assessments
Can therapists diagnose mental health conditions in Ontario?
Registered psychotherapists and social workers in Ontario cannot formally diagnose mental health disorders.
Formal diagnoses are typically completed by psychologists, psychological associates, psychiatrists, family doctors, nurse practitioners, or pediatricians, depending on the concern.
However, therapy can still help people explore symptoms, understand patterns, develop coping strategies, and receive support even without a formal diagnosis.
Can you help if I think I may have ADHD, anxiety, trauma, or another mental health condition?
Yes. Many people begin therapy because they are trying to better understand their experiences, emotions, relationships, attention difficulties, stress levels, or mental health symptoms.
Our therapists can support clients experiencing concerns related to anxiety, trauma, ADHD, burnout, addiction, emotional overwhelm, depression, grief, relationship challenges, and more. If a formal assessment or diagnosis may be helpful, we can also discuss appropriate referral options.
Can therapy help with burnout, emotional exhaustion, or feeling overwhelmed?
Yes. Many people reach out for therapy because they feel emotionally exhausted, constantly overwhelmed, disconnected from themselves, or stuck in survival mode for long periods of time.
Therapy can help people better understand stress patterns, emotional overload, nervous system responses, boundaries, relationship dynamics, and the impact of chronic pressure over time. It can also provide space to slow down, process emotions, and begin reconnecting with themselves in a more sustainable way.
